South Korean cinema has witnessed a dramatic transformation in the past few decades, growing from a fledgling local industry to a force of international repute. Korean films have not only managed to hold their own at home but are increasingly being exported and reworked in other parts of the world. The Yeonghwa Film Club at the Korean Cultural Centre India provides a platform for showcasing the best films from one of the most vibrant cinematic cultures in Asia.
Drawing its name from the Korean word for film, the Yeonghwa Film Club will encourage intensive engagement with Korean cinema through talks, workshops and discussions that explore its shifting cultural context within a globalizing world. Screenings will be organised every Friday around monthly themes that focus on film genres, directors and actors. Audiences are invited to join for conversations after the screenings over tea and Korean snacks.
In January, the club will be showing some of renowned Korean director Kim Ki Duk’s latest works. The month will close with a special session on 25th January where it will be charting Kim Ki Duk’s influence on Malayalam cinema through the documentary, Dear Kim (2009), followed by a talk by Bindu Menon, Assistant Professor, Lady Shri Ram College for Women. Film enthusiasts also stand a chance to win some of Kim’s acclaimed works in online DVD giveaways conducted every week in January on their Facebook page.
