Shock Waves 2012: A unique Film Festival in Capital

2^nd International Film Festival on Disaster Risk Reduction

Global Forum for Disaster Reduction (GFDR) cordially invites you to Shock Waves 2012 (Second International Film Festival on Disaster Risk Reduction) on 3-4 Aug, 2012 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. This event is organized in collaboration with Japan Foundation. The Festival timings are 10 AM to 6 PM both days. Inaugural Function is at 10 AM on 3rd Aug and Valedictory Function will be at 4 PM on 4th Aug, 2012.

The Film Festival will screen films received from different parts of the world on following categories:

 (a)               Learnings from Japan

(b)               Living with Disasters

(c)                Beyond Disasters (Sustainable Development)

(d)               Indigenous Knowledge and Practices

(e)                Protecting our Earth (CCA and Environment issues)

(f)                 Culture of Disaster Preparedness (School and Community Focus)

Synopsis- The walled city of Old Delhi is a cultural universe unto itself, a sprawling, chaotic but infectiously spirited neighbourhood where life assumes many fascinating forms in a constant struggle for survival. This documentary film captures a vibrant city caught between the past and the present, between decay and renewal, between hope and despair, between tradition and modernity. A freewheeling journey through the varied aspects of Old Delhi - its heartbeats, its religious moorings, its food, its musical legacy, its poetry and its social identity - the film gets up close and personal with individuals and groups that are striving to keep the walled city's rich heritage alive in the face of constant flux, not all of which is salutary. Dil Ki Basti Mein is a tribute to the life-affirming soul of a resilient city with a glorious history, a none-too-stable present but, hopefully, a worthy future...

Anwar : Dream of a Dark Night

The world we live in is in the throes of a desperate quest for peace and tranquility. But it is increasingly losing its way in an intractable maze of violent conflicts, ethnic skirmishes, economic meltdowns and corporate scams. Here, hope dies first. But dreamers do continue to dream. Meet Anwar. Anwar is Delhi slum-dweller, rag picker and car cleaner. He is a mere speck in the big picture of this bitter ongoing global struggle. But his story of resilience is no less significant, no less remarkable. Anwar has left behind a mortgaged piece of agricultural land in his pretty village in pursuit of a dream. He wants to build a movie hall of his own in his sleepy hamlet on the Indo-Bangladesh border. So he slogs from dawn to midnight in the big, heartless city. Four years on, and many ups and downs later, Anwar’s dream is a reality. His village picture hall is up and running and people are streaming in… This film – a story as much of one man as of Everyman – is an attempt to celebrate a defiant dream that illumines a night of all-enveloping, impenetrable darkness.
