Vineet Kumar is a renowned blogger and media analyst. He seems to be quite disappointed with the time and money he wasted in watching Sudhir Mishra’s new film Inkaar. Read why…

Fusion of entertainment and being socially relevant with sensibility is undoubtedly very sensible genre of cinema for a society/country like ours, but at the same time it’s very challenging too. Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest flick qualifies for the same genre, but people are finding it to be a miss. Here is how a young viewer looks at the movie. Read what Vinay Singh thinks about the movie, Vinay is a young television journalist and has just started his career.

Ladakh, Dharamshala, Gorakhpur, Patna: New hot nodes of the film festival circuit

-- By Anindita Datta Choudhury in The Economic Times

Glam queen Cannes was not built in a day . Neither will Dharamshala be as it aspires to be a shining dot in the map of the movie buff. But the sleepy Himachal town is taking the much-needed baby steps, and the organisers of the Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF) hope their efforts will bring about a sea change in how the world - tinsel or tell-tale - views their hometown . Well, that' a piece of very good news for Indian cinephiles.

But the better news is that a slew of Indian towns and tier-II cities are taking the same route, setting up their own film festivals, inviting legends of world cinema to tour their sleepy alleys, and hoping that someday the film festival circuit will talk about Leh, Patna or Gorakhpur with the same excitement as they now mention Locarno, Sundance or Tribeca .

BRINGING CINEMA TO THE HILLS

Filmmaker couple Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam had been planning to hold an international film festival in their hometown Dharamshala for years , but things finally came together last November . The two BBCdocumentarians had produced the first Tibetan feature film under their independent banner , White Crane Films.

"We are originally from Dharamashala and wanted to give back the town something," says Sarin. She managed to get about 25 sponsors and partners for the festival. Volunteers worked round the clock to make DIFF a success.

Right from painting "carrier" autorickshaws to blackening the windows of the screening theatre - they did it all.

Says Guy Davidi, an Israeli filmmaker, who gave four other international festivals a miss just to be in Dharamshala for the screening of his muchacclaimed film , Five Broken Cameras: "This is my first visit to India and I have been to no other city except Dharamshala. I had heard so much about the place that I couldn't resist myself," says Davidi.

EXOTIC LOCATION HELPS

Melvin Williams of Monasse Films , director of Ladakh International Film Festival (LIFF), says exotic locations are best suited for film festivals.

"Cannes was just a small riverside town . And look what it is now ! We organised the first film festival on the roof of the world. It was both challenging and exciting," says Williams, who managed to get filmmaker Shyam Benegal on board as the chairperson besides Shekhar Kapur, Vishal Bharadwaj, Govind Nihalani and Mike Pandey as patrons.

Held at an altitude of 11,562 meters, the LIFF is the 'highest' of its kind festival in the world. While the venue was a big crowd puller, the challenges Williams had to face were innumerable.

"Infrastructure-wise it was a nightmare. Airfares skyrocketed when we announced the festival. But the biggest challenge was to get our guests acclimatised to the high altitude," says Williams and adds that it took people two days to acclimatise to the altitude. The Army and choppers were on standby in case anyone got sick, he says.

‘Life of Pi’: An Oscar-nominated international film that’s a mostly international hit

 -Bryan Enk

"Life of Pi" has proven to be a modest hit in the States. But the fantastical adventure tale is truly enjoying the lucrative high "life" far from American shores.
Director Ang Lee's screen adaptation of Yann Martel's 2001 novel of the same name has certainly found something of a domestic audience, though with only a little over $91 million at the box office since its release on November 21, it's been considerably overshadowed by even more higher-profile holiday season offerings like "Les Miserables," "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and "Skyfall." Fox 2000 probably isn't worried about the $120 million production not making its money back, though, as the film has grossed more than $300 million internationally, bringing its current worldwide gross to just under $400 million.

It's an appropriate fate ("Life of Pi" is big on that concept) that international success should be achieved by a rather international production. "Life of Pi" marks a creative collaboration among representatives from many different countries, both in front of and behind the camera. Suraj Sharma and Irrfan Khan, who play the lead character of Pi at different ages, are Indian actors. Gerard Depardieu, who has a (rather inexplicable) cameo as a cranky cook, is French, and Rafe Spall, who plays The Writer, is British. Cinematographer Claudio Miranda is from Chile and composer Mychael Danna is Canadian. And screenwriter David Magee was born in Flint, Michigan. Go Blue!

The production went through a few international directors before Taiwanese-born Ang Lee signed on. Indian-American director M. Night Shyamalan was first approached to direct, though he ultimately turned it down due to the novel's ending possibly clashing with his own reputation for final-act twists. The project was offered to Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron, who turned it down for "Children of Men." French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet was also briefly attached.

Principal photography involved some rather formidable globe-hopping as well. Filming began in Pondicherry, India and other parts of the country before heading to Taiwan, where the crew shot for five and a half months in Taipei Zoo and Kenting National Park, located in Pingtung County where Lee was born. While in Taiwan, the ocean scenes were shot at a giant tank built in an abandoned airport (which came to be known as the world’s largest self-generating wave tank with a capacity of 1.7 million gallons). After photography was completed in Taiwan, the production moved back to India and wrapped in Montreal, Canada.

The complex visual effects for the film also brought together quite the international team. The lead effects company for the production was Rhythm & Hues Studios, based in El Segundo, California, though the 3D effects were created by artists from all of the R&H divisions, including locations in Mumbai and Hyderabad (India), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Vancouver (Canada) and Kaohsiung (Taiwan).

"Life of Pi" has been nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects. It's an honor that is indeed being felt all over the world.

Great Korean films in Delhi...every friday!

- NDFS Desk

South Korean cinema has witnessed a dramatic transformation in the past few decades, growing from a fledgling local industry to a force of international repute. Korean films have not only managed to hold their own at home but are increasingly being exported and reworked in other parts of the world. The Yeonghwa Film Club at the Korean Cultural Centre India provides a platform for showcasing the best films from one of the most vibrant cinematic cultures in Asia.

Drawing its name from the Korean word for film, the Yeonghwa Film Club will encourage intensive engagement with Korean cinema through talks, workshops and discussions that explore its shifting cultural context within a globalizing world. Screenings will be organised every Friday around monthly themes that focus on film genres, directors and actors. Audiences are invited to join for conversations after the screenings over tea and Korean snacks.

In January, the club will be showing some of renowned Korean director Kim Ki Duk’s latest works. The month will close with a special session on 25th January where it will be charting Kim Ki Duk’s influence on Malayalam cinema through the documentary, Dear Kim (2009), followed by a talk by Bindu Menon, Assistant Professor, Lady Shri Ram College for Women. Film enthusiasts also stand a chance to win some of Kim’s acclaimed works in online DVD giveaways conducted every week in January on their Facebook page.
